Personal development plan to improve Leadership skills
I created a personal mission statement soon after I decided to participate in the Leadership Certificate Program. I chose to pursue the certificate as part of my James Scholar requirement for the Applied Health Sciences college. While I have made a few minor changes over time, the foundation of my personal leadership philosophy remains relatively the same.
Leadership is a complex process that can be defined in many ways. I personally believe leadership is a constantly evolving process, which can always be improved upon. For example, when the leader of a group makes a mistake, it is imperative to recognize the mistake and handle the consequences appropriately. This allows the group to continue pursuing whatever goals and objectives are desired. Along with that, a leader should always focus on the ultimate goal, while having the best intentions in mind. This increases the likelihood of achieving the desired goal and also ensures there is a positive dynamic among other group participants. Overall, leadership plays a significant role in the lives of every individual regardless of how it is defined.
Developing leadership skills is important to enhance my personal character as well as provide me with the necessary tools to achieve success within my career as a health administrator. It is my goal to become a healthcare executive so I can improve the healthcare system by offering the best services available. By strengthening my leadership skills, I hope to have a strong voice in the issues that shape the community, especially when it comes to healthcare. Improving these skills as a college student will enhance not only the quality of my career in the future, but my personal life as well. Leadership experiences at this age shape individual character while promoting learning through action. Changes in a community cannot be made if there is no one willing to take on a leadership role and address these issues. This is something I plan to work towards specifically in the healthcare field.
Defining individual core values is also an essential portion of my mission statement, which aids in the development of my personal leadership style. My core values help define my character and guide my beliefs, decisions, and actions.
